The value of ecosystem services, biodiversity and blue-green infrastructures in cities, exemplified by Dresden, Liberec and Děčín (BIDELIN)

Interdisciplinary Summer School 2019

on "Integrating ecosystem services into urban planning"

News frequently report about "European heat wave", "natural disaster", or "species extinction". Such issues are the consequences of urbanization and land use intensification; they show how far we are apart from a sustainable use of nature. These challenges can be counteracted by two innovative concepts, namely on ecosystem services and green infrastructure.

Ecosystem services are the benefits that people obtain from nature and contribute to their wellbeing.

Ecosystems in urban areas (i.e. parks, forests, brooks, alleys) - known as the elements of green infrastructure - bring multiple benefits to the people: regulate micro-climate, control air quality, reduce flood risks or give place for recreation.

This summer school is going to share the existing knowledge about ecosystem services and green infrastructure. It will enable their mapping and assessment during field work, excursions and GIS sessions right up to monetary evaluation. Students find a forum to discuss their experience within an international, multidisciplinary team and to apply their results to the recent challenges of urban planning and management.
